Second College Grant - Resistance

Treatment: maintain relatively unchanged conditions over time

Management Goals

Densely forested area in fall with multi-colored leaves.

  • Encourage a multi-aged / size structure and maintain quality across all size classes
  • Maintain hydrological cycle and limit erosion
  • Sustain table carbon pools with accreting living biomass carbon
  • Maintain/increase vigor and quality of residual trees while maintaining current productivity levels consistent with northern hardwood forests

Strategies & approaches

Downed, dead log with flags on it and a sensor box above it in a forest.

  • Reduce competition for moisture, nutrients, and light
  • Single-tree selection (70-80 ft2/acre residual basal area)
  • Multi-aged cohort
  • Retain biological legacies
  • Increase downed dead wood
