Survival and Growth of Adaptation Tree Plantings in a Northern Minnesota USA Red Pine Woodland

A new publication from the Cutfoot/Red Pine ASCC site can help inform management decisions for future adaptation plantings in similar red pine ecosystems. Palik et al. (2026) assessed native versus novel hardwoods and native versus novel pine survival at the site, along with diameter growth for the species. These results assess survival and growth eight years after planting.

Native hardwoods had better growth and survival than novel hardwoods, whereas native pines had greater survival than novel pines but similar diameter growth. The full manuscript can be accessed here!
